Accidents seem to just happen out of the blue. That's one of the reasons that they are called "accidents."

However, there are a number of things that you can do to avoid getting into an automobile accident.

If you are driving here are some of the precautions you should take whenever you get behind the wheel of your vehicle.

• Stay calm, even if another driver behaves poorly. Avoid becoming a victim of "road rage."

• Do not cross any train tracks if you see a train, even if it looks like it's quite far away. One reason you should wait until the train passes is that it is possible your car could stall while you are trying to cross the tracks.

• Look over your shoulder and check your mirrors before you want to turn or change lanes. Do everything that you can safely do in order to see any nearby traffic.

• If, for some reason you begin to go off the road, do not jerk your wheel trying to get back. Instead you should slowly turn the wheel and ease your vehicle back onto the highway.

• If there is water on the road and your vehicle begins to hydroplane you should not stomp on your brakes. Instead you should raise your foot away from the accelerator. Then try to turn into the direction that your vehicle is turning rather than against it. After you've begun to control the direction your vehicle is going in, you can begin to slowly brake.

• If you drive more slowly than the rest of the traffic around you, you should stay in the right lane.

• Keep your eyes open for animals crossing the road.

• If you see an animal crossing sign, slow down.

• If an animal runs in front of your vehicle you should attempt to avoid hitting it only if you can do it safely. Do not make any sudden or dangerous movements that could cause you to lose control of your vehicle or get into a wreck. Cruel as it may sound, this is especially true if the animal that runs in front of your vehicle is very small.

• Always watch out for pedestrians, bicyclists, motor scooter riders, and other drivers.

• If you get a flat tire make sure to get off to the side of the road as quickly as you can. If possible you should get completely off the road. Once off the road you should make sure that you are a safe distance away from any traffic before you exit your vehicle.
