When someone is exposed to asbestos over time they may develop a life-threatening disease such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, or lung cancer. Diseases that are induced by asbestos typically will take several decades to develop after the initial exposure.
Although most of the people who have developed an asbestos-related disease have become victims of the disease after repeated exposure to asbestos, there is actually no safe level of exposure.
Subsequently, the absolute best way of reducing the development of diseases related to asbestos is by avoiding and/or limiting any exposure to the mineral or products that contain that mineral.
Here are a number of ways that you can limit your exposure to asbestos.
1. If you work around any materials that contain asbestos make sure that you wear a mask that has a HEPA filter. The mask should securely cover both your mouth and your nose.
2. If you work around materials that contain asbestos do not wear or bring any clothing that you wear at work into your home. If you do not have work shoes that you leave at work then thoroughly wipe down your shoes with a damp cloth. You should also leave these shoes outside.
3. If you live in an area where natural asbestos occurs in high levels you will need to minimize dust. You can do this by having your driveways paved, keeping your windows closed during dry weather, and avoiding disturbing the soil while landscaping. In addition, be aware of any of the day-to-day activities that could disturb the soil. This would include bicycle riding, playing games, running, jogging, and other types of outdoor physical activities.
4. If you live in an older home you should assume that the materials that were used to build your house contain asbestos. If there is any remodeling to be done you will have to first have the asbestos in your home assessed and then removed by professional asbestos abatement contractors. Also, if you or anyone else wants to watch the professionals remodel, don the same safety gear that is being worn by the people who are performing the remodeling.
If you have been exposed to asbestos while working and you have developed an asbestos-related disease, you may be eligible for compensation from that employer. An experienced asbestos attorney will be able to help you to review your employment history in order to determine when the exposure occurred.
