Traffic accidents, sometimes called traffic collisions, motor vehicle accidents, car accidents, automobile accidents, or motor vehicle collisions, happen when a vehicle collides with a pedestrian, another vehicle, wild or domesticated animals, stationary objects such as trees or utility poles, or road debris.

Traffic accidents may result in serious injury, death, and/or property damage.

There are a number of different factors that affect the possibility of getting into a traffic accident. These include the design of the vehicle, how fast it is driven, the quality of the road, and the skill or possible impairment of the driver(s).

Aside from causing pain and injury, traffic accidents are financially costly to both the individuals involved as well as to society in general.

There are numerous things that drivers and passengers can do to prevent accidents and/or lessen injuries. Here are some that you should consider:

• Always wear your seatbelts because they can prevent serious injury and even death if you're involved in a crash.

• Make sure to have your brakes checked on a regular basis.

• Check to make sure that your tires are in good condition.

• Wear sunglasses during the day in order to lower the amount of glare.

• Secure any loose objects that are in your vehicle so that the objects don't move around. If they move they can distract you while you're driving.

• Don't use your cell phone to talk with anyone while you are driving.

• Do not text anyone while driving.

• Make sure that you are well rested before you drive. Dozing off and being sleepy can lead to a serious accident.

• Do not drive if your driving could be impaired by medications, alcohol or illegal drugs.

• Before you start to drive your vehicle make sure that your steering wheel, seat, and mirrors are in their proper positions.

• Make sure to signal before you change lanes or make any turns.

• Use your headlights during inclement weather as well as throughout the night.

• If the weather is bad you should drive more slowly.

• Do not tailgate. If you follow another vehicle too closely and the vehicle stops suddenly you might not have the time you will need to stop without hitting it.

• Drive at a steady pace.

• Obey all of the speed limits.

• Slow down as you approach an intersection.

• Stay in the same lane when you are in an intersection.

• If there's any doubt in your mind about who has the right of way you should always yield to the other vehicle.

• Do not try to drive past a yellow light in order to beat it before it turns to red.
